The TSB has just announced its £8.5m CR&D competition “Make it lighter, with less” to support collaborative R&D projects to develop advanced materials and manufacturing technologies.

This competition aims to strengthen the UK’s collective expertise in lightweighting, and to develop a more robust and competitive supply base.

It will require consortia to have representation from at least two different industry sectors as well as the supply chain.

Following on from our previous announcement about the NCC-ACCIS Seminars, we can now tell you that the first in this series of monthly research seminars will take place on Thursday 30th January 2014 here at the National Composites Centre.

This first seminar entitled Managing Damage and Effecting Recovery in Advanced Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites will be led by Professor Ian Bond of the Advanced Composites Centre for Innovation and Science.

The NCC were pleased to have hosted the first ever Composites Leadership Forum (CLF) Composites in Oil and Gas Roadmapping Workshop here today.

 

We welcomed a dozen influential leaders in the Oil and Gas industry and are delighted that the CLF chose the National Composites Centre as their venue to hold these discussions. Those in attendance included NCC Members GE and Shell, as well as Magma Global, Pipex, Element Materials Technology and BP. The session was led by Dr. Faye Smith.

A series of monthly seminars between the NCC and the ACCIS department at the University of Bristol has just been launched and will run from January 2014 up until June 2014. These seminars will be held both at the NCC and ACCIS on an alternating basis (in January the seminar will be held at the NCC, in February at ACCIS, etc.) with ACCIS members coming to the NCC to present and NCC members presenting at the university.

The demand for components manufactured in composite materials is increasing exponentially and is not only focused on aerospace. The automotive, marine and renewable energy industries all offer expanding opportunities to supply chain companies. In order to give companies the best market opportunities to win these new orders it may be necessary to start to make the transition to manufacture in composites from other materials.

The UK National Composites Centre (NCC) has recently celebrated the 1st Anniversary of their partnership with MSC. In the past 12 months MSC Software helped to create a collaborative environment where the NCC and its partners work on future advanced composites products.

This week marks the tenth anniversary of the last flight of the world's first and only commercial plane capable of breaking the sound barrier.

 

The Bristol Post comments that, “NOTHING has ever come closer to summing up the essence and spirit of Bristol than the great feat of engineering and innovation that is Concorde. The record-breaking supersonic jet, which was designed and developed by engineers beavering away in the workshops of Filton, captured the imagination of a generation and catapulted the aviation industry into the modern age.”

The rail Enabling Innovation Team, National Composites Centre and Railway Industry Association are hosting a workshop to identify opportunities and solutions for the UK rail industry where advanced materials can offer significant through-life cost reduction benefits.

The objective of this event is to create new networking opportunities and cost effective solutions between the advanced materials and rail industries through discussion of the challenges facing the Future Railway.
