Join the NCC Chief Executive Peter Chivers, the British Plastics Federation and Composites UK at the inaugural 'Thermoplastic Composites' seminar taking place in London on 27th February 2014. This seminar will provide you with the ideal opportunity to network with your peers and listen to expert speakers discussing Thermoplastics. Topics at the seminar include Lightweighting Materials, challenges when recycling composites and processing composite materials.

The National Composites Centre together with the other 6 partners of the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult gathered in January for the organisation’s first summit. Keynote Speaker, Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne used the opportunity to announce £60 million of new funding for the development of new high-tech aerospace technology at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry.

On 27th/28th January Composites UK is meeting with engineers from the HS2 line to explore opportunities for composite applications in their infrastructure. This first initial consultation is invite-only, but subsequent more open meetings will be held to explore specific applications. If you are not attending the meeting but have ideas you would like to propose for initial discussion, please contact Composites UK by close of play Thursday 23rd January.

The BBC’s Business Daily reporter Justin Rowlatt visited the NCC to record an interview with Colin Sirett Airbus and the NCC’s Peter Chivers about the use of carbon composites. The programme piece should be aired on Wednesday 22nd January just after 3pm (GMT).

The TSB has just announced its £8.5m CR&D competition “Make it lighter, with less” to support collaborative R&D projects to develop advanced materials and manufacturing technologies.

This competition aims to strengthen the UK’s collective expertise in lightweighting, and to develop a more robust and competitive supply base.

It will require consortia to have representation from at least two different industry sectors as well as the supply chain.

Following on from our previous announcement about the NCC-ACCIS Seminars, we can now tell you that the first in this series of monthly research seminars will take place on Thursday 30th January 2014 here at the National Composites Centre.

This first seminar entitled Managing Damage and Effecting Recovery in Advanced Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites will be led by Professor Ian Bond of the Advanced Composites Centre for Innovation and Science.

The NCC were pleased to have hosted the first ever Composites Leadership Forum (CLF) Composites in Oil and Gas Roadmapping Workshop here today.


We welcomed a dozen influential leaders in the Oil and Gas industry and are delighted that the CLF chose the National Composites Centre as their venue to hold these discussions. Those in attendance included NCC Members GE and Shell, as well as Magma Global, Pipex, Element Materials Technology and BP. The session was led by Dr. Faye Smith.

A series of monthly seminars between the NCC and the ACCIS department at the University of Bristol has just been launched and will run from January 2014 up until June 2014. These seminars will be held both at the NCC and ACCIS on an alternating basis (in January the seminar will be held at the NCC, in February at ACCIS, etc.) with ACCIS members coming to the NCC to present and NCC members presenting at the university.
