The National Composites Centre celebrated the success of the extension project with a tradition-filled Topping Out ceremony in front of an array of international business leaders yesterday. NCC Member companies and other industrial representatives participated as cement was trowelled, evergreen branches banished bad luck and a tankard was presented to confirm the project is on track for completion in July 2014.

On Thursday 6th March, a Graphene Consortium Building Workshop will be held at the National Composites Centre. The Graphic Consortium Building Workshops are held to support the forthcoming funding competition for feasibility studies in the application of graphene. The aims of the workshops include:

-       Expose industrial organisation to the possibilities offered by graphene

-       Encourage industry to actively engage in developing applications incorporating graphene and to lead projects with this aim

Students from Badminton School are working with engineers from the National Composites Centre (NCC) to invent a novel bio-organic composite material. The three girls, all aged 16 and 17, are using everyday kitchen caddy liners to create a sustainable and bio-degradable material.

On Monday 17th March, Prof Steve Tsai of Stanford University, along with his international team, will be visiting the NCC to present and discuss the development of novel Thin Ply technology and associated design and manufacturing techniques.

The seminar will take place between 2.00pm and 5.30pm (please see the below attachment for the agenda).

The NCC was pleased to host Finance Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid MP, and Chris Skidmore, Member of Parliament for Kingswood, to provide a progress report on the building of our extension. The centre received additional government funding in the Autumn Statement 2012 to help expand operations, and the new building is already nearing the half-way point of construction.

Mentoring is...

"offline help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking."

As you may have heard, the National Composites Centre was recently awarded funding from the BIS' Sector Mentoring Challenge Fund.

With the support of Composites UK, we are running a pilot to help support the growth of our sector by linking 10 Mentors and 10 Mentees to work with each other over a 12 month period beginning in April 2014.
