Second International Symposium on Automated Composites Manufacturing - 23/04/2015

On the 23rd and 24th of April 2015, Dr. Peter Giddings, Mattia Di Francesco and Matt Scott attended the second edition of the International Symposium on Automated Composites Manufacturing in Montreal. Following from the success of the first 2013 edition, the event attracted 140 delegates from all over the world representing industry and academia.

The symposium provided a focused forum for the Composites community to share information and exchange ideas on the automation of composites manufacture. Two main topic areas were discussed: Automated Fibre Placement and liquid moulding processes, addressing the needs of the low-volume aerospace market and of the high-volume automotive markets respectively.

During the first session of the conference, Peter and Mattia presented the outcomes of their work on the assessment of the manufacturability of convex geometries using the Automated Fibre Placement Method (see downloadable images below). Their work was very positively received by the audience that expressed interest for both the developed experimental and simulation methods.

A conference dinner and a visit to the composite laboratories at Concordia University completed what was a very successful event. The symposium offered the delegates plenty of opportunities to create connections with potential customers and collaborators from all over the world and gave everyone an overview of the state-of-the-art in this fast evolving area.
