NCC at ITHEC 2014

On the 27th and 28th of October, Mattia Di Francesco, Gary Poynton, Alex Wallace and Tim Young attended the 2014 edition of the International Conference and Exhibition on Thermoplastic Composites (ITHEC) in Bremen, Germany. The event followed the successful ITHEC 2012 and was attended by over 300 delegates, a 10% increase with respect to the previous event. With more than 50% of the delegates travelling from outside of Germany, the ITHEC 2014 was truly an international event.

The conference was articulated around four sessions over two days: Automotive, Hybrid Materials and Technologies, Aerostructures and Energy Applications. Each day was opened by a keynote speech, the first on the potential for thermoplastic composites in the automotive sector (J. Kopp, BMW Group) and the second on the opportunities and challenges for thermoplastic composites in the aerospace industry (S. G. LaReviere, The Boeing Company).

The presenters, 25 in total, briefed the delegates on the latest developments in thermoplastic composite materials, novel manufacturing simulation methods, innovative manufacturing methods for hybrid structures, new inspection and qualification methods and much more. Overall, the speakers showed how the successful use of new materials, thermoplastic composites in this case, originates from a change in the paradigms which drive the design of the component and of its manufacturing process.

The exhibition, the lunches, the coffee breaks and the conference dinner gave the NCC delegation plenty of opportunities to network and build relationship with the over 70% of delegates attending from industry.

The next ITHEC is set for autumn 2016 and we look forward to meeting you there. In the meantime, please get in touch with if you have any questions.
