The UK is a world leader in additive manufacturing (AM) and has been at the forefront of developing this technology for many years. However, there is a globally competitive race underway with major government backed programmes already established in the US, Japan, Singapore and Germany.

AM is frequently used at the NCC during automated tape or fibre placement, infusion moulding or hand layup manufacturing. These processes involve applying layer upon layer of individual fibres or material piles to created unique shapes and structures with valuable properties including; high strength, light weight and non-corrosive qualities.

The NCC is working closely with the ‘Additive Manufacturing Special Interest Group’ (SIG) which aims to create and promote new knowledge and knowledge transfer in the area of AM and 3D printing, primarily for the benefit of UK business and economic growth.
